The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the retail sector and required retail enterprises and investors to rethink business models including accelerating the movement to online transactions. A number of retail businesses have needed to enter bankruptcy and restructure operations while others continue to thrive. There is an ongoing thinking around who the winners and losers are going forward. Some of the trends are cyclical and some secular that will extend beyond the current environment. The consideration of retail could not be more timely as we enter the critical holiday season and the upcoming “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday,” the traditional kick-off to holiday season sales.

To help us understand what this means for investors, we are fortunate to have the highly respected and widely followed retail sector expert, Dana Telsey. Ms. Telsey is CEO and Chief Research Officer of the Telsey Advisory Group (TAG). TAG’s research team covers U.S. and international companies across all market caps in the following sectors: advertising, apparel manufacturers, children’s and teen retailers, consumer electronics retailers, cosmetics, department stores, discounters, footwear, gaming and lodging, home furnishings retailers, home improvement retailers, luxury goods, media, office supply retailers, off-price retailers, pay TV companies, restaurants, specialty apparel retailers, sporting goods retailers, and supermarkets. She has covered over 100 retail firms and past recipient of Thomson Reuters award for “Number 1 Stock Picker for Multiline Retail” and Traders Magazine “Woman- Owned Brokerage of the Year” as well as being a thirteen-year member of Institutional Investor magazine’s “All-America Research Team” where she was ranked the Number One Specialty Stores analyst for seven consecutive years. In the most recent ranking of Institutional Investor magazine’s “All-America Independent Research Team”, she was ranked the Number One Specialty Stores analyst and Number One Broadlines & Department Stores analyst.
